Midcentury Murano gold aventurine bowl

Gold leaf is expensive so glassmakers in post-war Italy were cautious with its use. It wasn't something to let the apprentices anywhere near; you don't want a piece with expensive ingredients to end up as a second. The Italian lira was worth next to nothing, which was good for exports, but not so good for buying gold.

Lots of gold, as in this heavy 1940s or early 1950s bowl, was a sign of a quality piece. As the piece is blown, the gold leaf fractures so that on some pieces, where a small amount of gold is put on at an early stage of blowing, there is just a faint hint of gold in the finished piece. In this case, however, they haven't cut any corners. The whole piece is golden which means that the gold was laid on thickly and not expanded much after that.

I like the beautifully-spaced amethyst murrines (slices of glass cane) in this piece, which give it a sense of circular flow. The gold and the purple are in a thick casing of clear glass.

It's hard to say which firm made it. We bought it from a seller in the UK who described it as A.Ve.M. which is certainly possible. It's clearly Murano glass from one of the leading midcentury firms.
