This bears a proprietary Seguso Vetri d'Arte label from the right era, so it will have been the work of either Poli or his assistant and successor, Mario Pinzoni. The vintage label is shown in one of the pictures. Heiremans' Murano Glass: Themes and Variations tells us that this label was used from the "late 1940s until the early 1960s." Poli was art director and a partner in Seguso Vetri d'Arte from 1937 to 1963, and, on the face of it, appears to be the likely designer. Pinzoni worked closely with Poli from 1954 and succeeded him as art director at Seguso (1963-1971).

It's a stylised, straight-backed figure - a yoga instructor would approve of the posture - in smoke-gray glass, in a seated, hugging or enveloping pose. You can read into it what you will, but to me it says, "I include you. You're with me." I think it's the sort of thing that gives a good feeling to a house or a business. It's a fantastic piece of art. I know already that when it sells, I'll kick myself for ever having listing it.

If you look on the web you'll find lots of sellers offering pieces they claim to have been designed by Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri d'Arte. Sadly, most of them aren't. They are merely pieces in the sommerso (underlay) style for which he was famous, and which thousands of glassmakers continue to emulate.

This is a wonderful design - big, heavy, innovative, and important. It's certainly not something that every glassmaker in the world can copy. It's a fantastic piece of perfectly balanced, solid, handworked glass. Ducks and other animals are all very well - good quality Murano beasts are fun and collectable; examples of clever design and glassmaking - but this faceless "everyperson" is in a different league.
