Pair of signed and labelled 1950s crystal VAL SAINT LAMBERT bowls
These are from Belgian firm, Val St-Lambert. Murano and Scandinavia get all the attention, so mid-century VSL is under-rated and undervalued. These can be purchased separately for $100 each. (Email us at inquiries@modernistglass.com. A green one originally listed with them has already sold.)
Judith Miller, in "20th Century Glass", talks of "the superb quality and weight of Val Saint-Lambert crystal". She says that "in the early 1900s the firm was one of the world leaders in luxury cut lead crystal..." If you had built a luxury ocean liner and decorated it in the art nouveau or art deco style, you put VSL glass in it.
By the 50s, the fashion had changed and this was their response. These pieces were either designed by Charles Graffert, who had seen them through their glory days and retired in 1958, or by his successor as head of design (1958-1967), Rene Delvenne.
Other non-Murano, non-Scandinavian mid-century glassmakers that we buy when we can and that you may also like include:
Whitefriars (England), Maastricht (The Netherlands), Leerdam (The Netherlands), and numerous Czechoslovakian firms.
