1960s Pavel Hlava signed Exbor Czechoslovakian art glass vase with cut glass windows
This piece really needed more than the ten photos our website allows. It has interesting surface decoration from the application, I believe, of a metallic oxide to the hot blue-cased glass. It also has window cuts on opposite sides of the vase; the makers have cut and polished off the surface decoration on two of the six sides to allow us to look into or through the vase.
The last picture shows a scan from the excellent Czech Glass 1945-1980: Design in an Age of Adversity, Helmut Ricke, Ed. It shows 3 pieces by Pavel Hlava designed in 1964 and 1966 which appear to use similar techniques in respect of the colour. Our piece is acid-etched on the base, 'EXBOR Czechoslovakia'. EXBOR was the glass export trade mark used by the EXBOR Glassworks, Novy Bor. Writing on this glassworks, in Czech Glass, Antonin Langhamer says, "During the 1960s, Pavel Hlava dominated the plant's production with his faceted four and six-sided vases adorned with embedded silver foil or nonflammable variegated materials."
