Labelled Czech 'Rhapsody' set designed Frantisek Zemek 1956
You will find few other designs from this era which have so many colours of glass in one piece, with each separate and distinct from the other, rather than merging together or overlapping. It's clever and meticulous glassmaking by craftsmen working with blobs of molten glass.
These are two pieces from the Rhapsody range, made at Mstisov glassworks and designed by Frantisek Zemek in 1956 (Hi Sklo Lo Sklo, Mark Hill, 2008). Zemek was head designer there from 1956-59 (Czech Glass 1945-1980, Helmut Ricke (Ed.)) A multi-talented craftsman and artist, he also worked at various times as a glassblower, a cutter, and an engraver.
We bought these pieces in part to help us to identify another larger piece from the same range, which had been in our collection for some time. I'll list that piece (which is shown in the last photo) in the next day or so.
