Large signed 'In the Harbour' 1950s Vicke LINDSTRAND engraved vase

This vase is shown in the 1955/56 Kosta catalogue.  On the whole, critics loved Lindstrand's engraved glass designs for Orrefors pre-1940 but were somewhat dismissive of the Kosta work.  This is currently being reevaluated.  There was an element of snobbery in this:  the Kosta period was very successful, commercially, and popular, which offended some critics. 

Much of the engraved work of the first half of the 20th century was overly twee  - doves, butterflies, and little girls skipping.  By the 50s, there was a reaction against this, and engraved pieces fell out of favour to some extent.  However, no-one would call this piece twee or kitsch.  

This is an example of the new lighter style of engraving introduced by Lindstrand with the employment of Rune Strand.

We believe Lindstrand's vast range of work for Kosta in the 50s, including some wonderful engraved designs, like this one, will come to be seen as the high point of his career.
