Labelled 'Bonora and C' Murano textured sommerso vase
The label on this vase reads "Vetri molati" (Italian for "ground glass") "Bonora & C" ("Bonora & Co") "Murano Venezia" (Murano Venice). This glass is very similar to pieces made by Campanella in the 1970s or 80s. I've included 2 pictures of Campanella pieces in this style shown in Leslie Pina's Italian Glass: Century 20. If it wasn't for the label, I would have simply assumed this was Campanella.
Have a look at the pictures and you'll see what I mean.
We're not familiar with this firm and can find no mention of them in our books or on the internet. Small firms set up, changed their names, and went bust on a regular basis in Venice in the middle of last century. Bonora & C will have been a workshop that specialised in ground glass, (as did Campanella). We would suspect that one of the glassblowers from Bonora & C either worked for Campanella and copied their style, or was absorbed into Campanella and brought his textured moulds with him.
Traditionally Muranese firms have a somewhat relaxed attitude to intellectual property.
