Ingeborg Lundin 1960 crystal vase for Orrefors
Modernist cut crystal like this is so under-rated. People think of cut crystal bowls their mother served fruit salad in and don't realise that the best Swedish modernist glass designers worked in this medium. Just look at the pictures. It's a stunner.
This is an Ingeborg Lundin design, shown in the 1960 Orrefors catalog. Variations on this pattern were designed from 1955 to 1960. Pina and Vigier's book, Smoke & Ice: Scandinavian Glass 1930-2000, shows 13cm and 25cm versions. (Ours is 19.5cm.) They value the 25cm version at US$700-$900, so they, at least, recognise the worth of this style of piece.
Lundin was the first of Orrefors' female designers, joining the business in 1947 and remaining there till 1971. Her cuttings and engravings in the 50s and 60s were a break from Orrefors design tradition. In the 1960s, after Edvin Ohrstrom left, she took his role of the design of the complex and beautiful ariel pieces. An example of her ariel work is at http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/1763
