Flygsfors 1960s Wiktor Berndt Zodiac series Taurus Vase

Berndt replaced Kedelv as chief designer at Flygsfors in 1956.  This vase is one of a noteworthy series he did in the 1960s - mould-blown, with coloured underlay (here grey) and cased in clear, and with surface relief of figures or scenes.  Once cooled, the raised design was ground, giving it a touch of hand-finishing (see close-ups).  It's an interesting effect, an innovative approach at a time when mechanisation was starting to displace craftsmen.

This piece, with a primative but stylised bull or bison, has a sense of being something painted on a cave wall, viewed through the smoke of the clan's fire. The slight ripple effect in the glass (see pic), contributes to this.  The rough ground finish is in keeping with this impression.

Appropriately, considering the name of the book, Pina and Vigier show this piece in Scandinavian Glass 1930-2000: Smoke and Ice.  They value it at US$350-$400.   Ours is a bargain at $250.

Height: 19.3cm (7.5 inches)
Width: 12 cm
Depth: 4.8cm
Weight: approx 1.25kg
Condition: Very good. A few tiny nibbles (see last pic), the largest is 1.5mm x 1.5mm and is on the back of the piece. They can't be seen at all from the front.  A 1.5cm scratch also on the back. Expected wear scratching to the base.  The rim has been bevelled and polished in places, presumably to remove post-manufacture nibbles to the rim.  At its largest, the bevel is about 2mm.
Signed on the base: Berndt Flygsfors
