On hold - Palmqvist opalescent Selena vase for Orrefors
Sven Palmqvist had a long and distinguished design career at Orrefors, from 1946 to 1980. This is the first of three pieces we'll be listing from his Selena series, shown in Orrefors 1954 catalogue. The last pic shows the three together. This is the larger vase. This is a nice vintage set at a good price.
We like to put together sets and generally I like to list sets together, for people to buy as a set. (When Sothebys comes to sell them for your great grandchildren in 100 years, it will be the fact that you have not just one, but three, that they will be raving about.) However, I recognise that in the current economy, people may not be able to afford the whole set, so we're listing them separately.
They are opalescent, a useful feature in a vase because it hides (or at least disguises) any waterstaining. The usual way to create opalescent glass was to blow lead powder directly into the glass during the glassmaking process. Don't try this at home, just buy a vintage one.
