Large signed 1960 Per Lutken Holmegaard drop vase
These Lutken vases are among Viv's favourites, but as she has several, I've persuaded her to let this one go, along with a smaller one that I'll list shortly. The pictures show that they make a great set. When two pieces like this overlap, there is an optic effect, so a set also gives you a chance to exercise some creativity in the way you display it.
As I've said in a previous listing, these vases are are very big and round and imposing; more than any other vase design I've seen, they have a huge volume for their height. Surprisingly, this one is nearly as wide in one direction (22 cm) as it is tall (24cm).
The secret, as with many of Per Lutken's Holmegaard designs, is the way they were made, using steam from a wet wooden pin, inserted in the gather of glass to blow the bubble. I think that a glassblower using a pipe couldn't match the perfection of this shape.
The blue in this piece is the same density throughout, but always looks darker at the edges because, obviously, at the edges you are looking through a greater thickness of glass, because of the curve of the design. To me, the difference in the shades of blue adds to the beauty of the piece.
