Unique signed Mona Morales-Schildt 1970 40cm shallow bowl with pattern of canes of glass

If you're looking for investment art, a large, striking piece of modernist art glass marked "unik", designed by a leading mid-century glass designer (one of the pioneer female designers), and made in 1970 by a famous Swedish glassmaker, and which sells for under US$2000 must surely be a tremendous bargain.  Compare it with buying a painting or a sculpture, or even a brand new piece of glass in a limited edition by one of the leading designers.  Vintage art glass is a steal.  Buy now or regret later.

This piece has canes of glass flowing around the broad lip of the bowl.  It will have required a great deal of precision to get this right, and this perhaps is the reason the piece didn't go into regular production.  The canes will have been set out on a flat metal surface known as a 'marver', then a hot blown bubble of glass will have been rolled over them in such a way as to pick them up.  The piece will then have been blown and worked into it's final shape.

Morales-Schildt (1908-1999) studied at the School of Industrial Art in Stockholm, studied ceramics in England and Germany on a scholarship, then studied painting in Paris.  She joined Kosta in 1958 as a glass designer.  We have a number of pieces of her work on our site.  See:
