In my view, ariel is just about the most clever and beautiful glassmaking there is.  This is drop-dead gorgeous.  Pernilla has done a pretty good job of capturing it in her photos but really, it's so much better in the flesh.  You can see how, because of all the layers and overlapping patterns, the camera struggles to work out what to focus on.  Our eyes manage this much better.

I've just listed some graal pieces (http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/2493 and http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/view/2492).  Ariel glass was based on graal and was also developed at Orrefors in Sweden.

As with graal, the glassmakers make a start then allow the glass to cool so it can be worked.  Deep patterns are cut or sandblasted into it. When another layer of crystal is put over the top, air is trapped, giving ariel its unique look.

Ingeborg Lundin is one of our favourite mid-century glass designers, the first woman to star at male-dominated Orrefors.  The complex Orrefors numbering on this piece tells us it was made in 1964, making it one of her earlier ariel pieces.  Other pieces of hers can be seen at http://www.modernistglass.com/glasspieces/search/lundin
