58cm, 8kg Seguso Vetri d'Arte Murano alexandrite obelisk
This showstopper of a piece is big (too big for Pernilla's photography set), rare (made from alexandrite), and bears the label of the Murano firm which made it. The combination of these things make it a special piece.
The glass is generally known as alexandrite. It's dichroic or dichromatic, meaning that it shows two colours, depending on the light. It's made with neodymium oxide (Nd2O3), a rare-earth binary compound.
Alexandrite will be a pale ice blue under fluorescent lighting and a striking lavender under incandescent lights or sunlight. Neodymium is still mined today, and alexandrite glass is still made, but it's not common and the cost of the process makes it relatively expensive. When Seguso Vetri d'Arte originally offered this for sale in the 1980s or 1990s they wanted 2,800,000 lire for it, as the original sticker on it shows, probably somewhere around US$2000. Vintage art glass is generally still an amazing bargain, with our price being only a little more than this original price.
