Signed Timo Sarpaneva Iittala Finlandia bark vase - one of two

In 1964, Timo Sarpaneva designed a range of vases called Finlandia. The unique and brilliantly clever feature of them was that they were made in carved pine moulds, which were gradually, and intentionally, destroyed through repeated contact with glass heated to 500 degrees centigrade. The moulds gave each piece a natural randomised ‘bark’ effect created by the carbonised wood. This effect is something which couldn't otherwise be convincingly created by an artist. Each piece was slightly different, changing as the mould gradually burnt out.

This is one of a set of two vases. They are not identical, for the reasons explained above, and because the other is a centimetre taller. The last picture shows the two together. See also:
