Signed Timo Sarpaneva 1951 Iittala 'Devil's Fist' art object
This is one of the great mid-century glass designs from the late Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, the Devil's Fist (Hiidennyrkki). It was designed in 1951 when he first came to Iittala. It was made from 1952 to 1960 (see Iittala: 125 years of Finnish Glass, Marianne Aav (ed.)). It's mould-blown, then hot worked, and sandblasted. Acid is used to give it a final matt finish.
It has a fleck off the base which is shown in one of the photos and for this reason the piece is selling at a bargain price. If you can find it elsewhere, you will be paying somewhere in the thousands of dollars.
