Fratelli Toso bowl with copper aventurine and scalloped rim
Glen, a friend and for a time our business partner, is a big fan of Fratelli Toso, so we've seen a lot of their work. Lots of curls and twists and scalloping, lots of layers of different colours and metallic oxides and random murrine patterns, lots of swirls and scatter patterns.
Leslie Pina's book, Fratelli Toso: Italian Glass 1854-1980 shows a selection of the wide range they produced. Prices have risen since Leslie's book came out in 2004. Over the last few years it has become much harder to find quality examples.
Fratelli Toso is an acquired taste. We've acquired it but there are a lot of designs from this prolific firm that we don't love. Black glass pieces (probably dark, dark green or purple) like this, with lots of copper aventurine, are among our favourites. This one also has a big orangey red spot in the middle. It's a night piece, designed to come into its own under night lights so it's hard to capture in photos, but I think you'll get the idea.
