Vicke Lindstrand Kosta 1970s engraved crystal giraffe
This giraffe was made in three sizes. This one, the largest, is hard to find. No doubt the thinness of the neck means that many haven't survived. We won it at auction recently after spirited bidding from Swedish giraffe/Kosta collectors. The previous one we obtained, a year or so ago, had horns that had been broken and repaired - obviously a hornless giraffe is seriously flawed, so we had to send it back.
Vicke Lindstrand designed this towards the end of his career at Kosta (which finished in 1972). Aside from the stylised shape, the key feature, and the thing that makes them particularly special, is the engraving. Kosta was a "full service" glass factory with highly skilled engravers, and Lindstrand was accustomed to creating designs which kept everyone busy. In general, the more distinct stages in the process of making a piece, the more collectable it is.
These look particularly good in a "herd", with several different sizes.
Height: 30 cm (12 inch)
Width: 6.5 cm
Weight: 495 g
Engraved "Kosta o5729" to the base as shown in the 4th photo. Note that the "o" is a "typographic error" by the engraver. The correct Kosta model number for the large size version is in fact 95729; he's missed the downward line off the first "9".
Condition: some less than 0.5 mm unintended bubbles
