Labelled 1960s Barbini Murano 55cm console bowl with gold
This is the most magnificant Barbini centrepiece bowl I've ever owned. Thick, ribbed, clear glass encases orange glass with masses of gold powder in the orange. It's a stunning spectacle. Beneath that is a white glass layer, also containing gold (as you can see in the picture of the label). The inside of the bowl is white.
This design, in other colours, appeared in the 1965 Weil Ceramics & Glass, Alfredo Barbini catalog. Weil imported Barbini glass into the US until the company folded in the early 70s.
Alfredo Barbini was a prodigiously talented glassblower. He and Archimede Seguso were the stars of their era, and both set up their own firms in Murano's post-World War Two glory days.
