Lindstrand polar bears iceblock paperweight for Kosta
This was clever design, enlightened management, and good business from Vicke Lindstrand. In the 1950s, the trend was for less cut and engraved glass. Kosta had a fully-staffed factory when Lindstrand arrived in 1950, and the cutters and engravers needed saleable products to work on. Lindstrand came up with this "iceblock" design with engraved seals, igloos, fish, etc. The paperweights look like chipped blocks of ice.
Here, the design of the polar bears is up to the usual high standard of Lindstrand art work.
Lindstrand used recycled glass from elsewhere in the factory, from the leftover clear glass at the end of the day, if I remember correctly. It has a greenish tinge which seems appropriate to the concept.
Height: 10 cm
Length: 18 cm (7 inches)
Weight: 1595 g
Engraved "KOSTA LINDSTRAND I C" (?) to the base, labelled "Kosta Sweden"
Condition: very light wear to the base (protected with old felt dots) aside from a 5x8mm chip on the base. Please note that it is very hard to find chips/fleabites on these because of the rough cut design, but we believe this is the only damage.
