Signed clear Michael Bang for Holmegaard 'hule' vase
These are a simple but brilliant design by Michael Bang for Danish firm Holmegaard. The randomised holes (hule) allow you to arrange your flowers in such a way that they stay where you put them. Personally, I prefer them without the flowers. Some of our glass is timeless - it could have been designed yesterday - but these have a "groovy", 1960s, space-age look to them.
More than other firms, Holmegaard achieves a wonderful fullness to its vases, which is seen in the roundness of this piece. I believe it comes from their skill in the use of the steam from wet wooden pins to inflate the gather of glass, the method developed by Per Lutken and his glassblowers in the 1950s.
We have a couple of other hulevases in different sizes and colours. One in particular, a 10cm clear version, would make a good set with this one.
