Double sommerso Seguso or Barbini art glass duck with thick gold
There are some who don't appreciate Murano figurines. I too, was sceptical about Murano ducks, until a spotter we used in Sydney some years ago (an elderly Venetian immigrant), showed us one her husband had bought for her when Murano glass first became available at David Jones, the Australian department store, in the 1960s.
In the "flesh", they are special. Hers wasn't for sale, but this one is equally good. Hopefully, our pictures are good enough to show this.
Its striking feature is the dense gold layer. Over the top of this is a thin layer of green glass, then a thicker amber layer which has been worked to represent the duck's head, feet, and tail. It looks gold in some lights, and a metallic green in others.
This version of the classic Murano duck design, probably from the Barbini or Archimede Seguso workshops, is standing on a clear glass base to give it extra weight and stability.
Height: 27cm (10.25 inches)
Condition: a shallow 4cm scrape on the back of the neck. A group of small indentations on the belly from manufacture. A 3mm long bubble by the feet.
