1950s Stromberg facet-cut vase
Facet-cut glass with a 'sommerso' ('submerged') or 'underlayed' coloured centre was designed in the 1950s and made in Sweden, Italy, and Czechoslovakia. It was a winning combination then and it still is today. The designs changed slightly over the years - for example, they tended to be more rectangular in the 80s, but the Italians are certainly making facet-cut vases today that look very similar to those they made 50 years ago.
We think the pieces made by Strombergshyttan make good sense for collectors. They made superior quality glass, most of it is signed, their recipe for clear glass produced a distinctive shade of Stromberg ice blue, and you know that they are not still making these designs.
This model number is from the late '50s and, though it's not clear how long it was in production, the factory was bought by Orrefors in 1976 and closed down in 1979.
Height: 10.5cm (4.25 inches)
Width: 12cm
Weight: 1660g
Engraved 'Stromberg B890' (?) to the base
Condition: heavy wear to the base, a few light scratches to the exterior, some water stains to the interior. As you can see from the pictures, these are barely noticeable on a coloured sommerso vase which is an advantage for collectors of this style. (For this reason, clear vintage vases which are without water stains should command a premium, but at the moment, they don't!)
