Signed Edward Hald 1955 slipgraal bowl for Orrefors

We particularly liked the combination of the cut swirl pattern and the flower in the middle of the base of this piece, and we also liked the price. Because of the complexity and time-consuming nature of the manufacturing process, graal is rare and expensive, so it's something of a buying coup to be able to list it for under US$300.  

In 1955, Orrefors made two slipgraal pieces with "L" numbering, then switched to "M", starting with 50M and finishing the year at 433M. This piece is 240M in that series - so if you buy this you know you have one of only 385 pieces made in that year (over 50 years ago).

Graal and ariel were among the triumphs of 20th century glassmaking technique, and both came from Orrefors. For graal, a thickwalled piece of glass is etched, cut or engraved with a pattern, and then reheated and overlayed with clear glass. When it's reheated the pattern becomes more defined. The name comes from the Swedish writer Froding's story of the holy grail.

Slipgraal is cut graal. The graal decoration is simplified, often in geometrical shapes such as stripes, checks, or rings.
