Goran and Ann Warff 1960s menhir sculpture for Kosta
We sold a 21 cm version of this design six months ago for US$800 (which was a bargain in itself). This one is 2/3rds of the size but less than a quarter of the price. We picked up a bargain and we've passed it on.
This piece is an example of 1960s glassmakers doing something completely different with glass. It's hard to capture in a photo but it's designed to be viewed through the clear, cut-and-polished side (as in the third and fourth photos). From there, you see the engraved designs on "the far wall". It's as if you were looking into a cave, at ancient rock carvings. The polished base reflects like a pool of water, and if there's light behind the carvings, which are cut into the rough grey rock-like exterior, they are lit up.
On the other hand, if you view the piece from the outside, it's like an ancient menhir - a large, upright, standing stone used in Megalithic times in Europe and elsewhere, and linked to the arcane practices of druids. In Sweden they were used into the pre-Roman, Iron age, to mark the graves of warriors.
It's a piece that will hold your attention and your interest, and it's also a piece you can show to a guest with confidence that it's not particularly fragile and easy to break. The husband and wife team of Goran and Ann Warff were jointly awarded the Lunning Prize - the Nobel prize of Scandinavian design - in 1968. They divorced in 1972. This piece was designed in the late 60s or early 70s.
