1960s Uno Westerberg art glass torso sculpture for Pukeberg
This is a fine figurine or sculpture from a relatively small Swedish firm from the middle of last century; in my view it's very collectable but currently undervalued.
It's pressed glass, designed by Uno Westerberg for Pukeberg. Pressed glass is made using a plunger to press molten glass into mould. It's not skilled work compared to the making of blown or cut glass. However, in some cases (and certainly this is one of them) the making of the mould on which the piece is based requires a great deal of artistic skill.
Pukeberg glassworks was founded in 1871 at Nybro, Sweden. In 1935 the firm hired the young architect Westerberg (1914-85) to design lighting. From the 1950s he also designed tablewear and art glass. In 1978 Pukeberg went bankrupt and was sold. After that it changed hands several times until being ascquired by Zero Interior AB (predominantly interested in lighting) in 1989.
