Large Hadeland 1950s Greenland set by Arne Jon Jutrem
This is a wonderful Grønlandsserien ("Greenland series") platter and bowl set by Norwegian firm, Hadeland. The series won a gold medal at the "Triennale di Milano" in 1954. We sold this set to friends some years ago and bought it back from them when the Christchurch earthquake changed their situation. (The glass suffered no damage in the quake.)
The striking feature is the random bubbles in the emerald green glass. The bowl is designed to sit on the platter, no doubt surrounded by bread or biscuits to accompany the contents of the bowl. Our friends didn't use them for serving, but just had them sitting on a table looking beautiful. Both pieces have a heavy casing of "bubble-less" glass to ensure that the bubbles aren't on the surface where they might make the piece less durable. The platter is just over 3kg and the bowl is 700g, so these are strong and substantial pieces.
Hadeland glass has been in existence since 1762, making it not only the oldest glassmaker but the oldest continuously operating manufacturing company of any sort in Norway. Like many other glassmakers, it started out making bottles, apothecary jars and fishing floats but by the early 20th century it was producing tableware and art glass. During the 1950s art glass was designed in the Scandinavian modern style. The business is still making quality art glass today and with over 600,000 visitors a year is one of Norway's top tourist attractions.
Jutrem is one of the famous names of Norwegian glassmaking, a painter, designer and Professor of Aesthetics. He had two spells at Hadeland, from 1950 to 1962, and later, as Art Manager, from 1988 to 1994.
