Large Murano 'wingnut' vase, attributed to Seguso Vetri d'Arte
We've had a couple of good customers who've wanted to buy this but we've put them off because we weren't sure who made it. The German publishers, Arnoldsche, have been advertising a new book on Murano firm Seguso Vetri d'Arte by leading Murano glass expert, Marc Heiremans, for some years. After ordering it from various websites, we finally approached Arnoldsche directly, and were told Heiremans has found new material that he wants to include and that it won't be out till 2006. We're now several years beyond that, so it may never arrive. In the meantime, we've seen a lot more glass and our view now is that it's almost certainly Seguso Vetri d'Arte. In any case, it's a lovely piece.
Poli (1900-1984) was artistic director of Seguso Vetri d'Arte until 1963. He is best known for his use of the sommerso ("submerged") technique by which the initial bubble glass is dunked in glass to form layers of different colours.
Archimede Seguso also made big, heavy, yellow and green sommerso pieces. Archimede Seguso, another star of 20th century glassmaking, co-founded Seguso Vetri d'Arte with his father and brother (among others), Later he left to set up his own workshop, Vetraria Archimede Seguso. Not surprisingly, there are sometimes similarities between the work of the two firms.
Two of the photos (those with text beside them) are taken from Leslie Pina's book, "Italian glass - Century 20", and show pieces in this style which she says are by one or other of the two firms. Pina values these at beween US$1,000 and $2,000.
