Perhaps because vases hold flowers, one of the recurring themes of art glass is the manufacture of vases with flower designs and motifs. This is a fascinating variation on that theme.

In this case the artist has created a vase with a grass or reed pattern. It looks as though she has laid something on the hot glass while sprinkling brown powdered glass over the piece. We haven't seen this sort of thing done before and our guess is that it was the result of a long period of experimentation.

This large vase is signed at the base by California-based artist, "Elin Christopherson 1995". Elin Christopherson has been creating in blown glass since 1983. Her work hangs in galleries alongside that of Dale Chihuly. ("Chr" for Christopherson is after all very close to "Chi" for Chihuly.)

Elin Christopherson has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California in 1989, and a Graduate degree in Glass at Alfred University in New York. The "artist's statement" on her website says, among other things, "I combine both mechanical and natural elements into handmade objects which spell a heritage through a crafts tradition."

Some of her vases, for example, combine this natural "grassy" look with bases which are shaped like cogs - the mechanical aspect she refers to. Our example is less of a juxtaposition and, in our view, more aesthetically pleasing. Elin was Glass Technician at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle for four years. She has also worked in various capacities, including gaffer and hot shop coordinator, at the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School in Washington since 1991. This particular piece was sourced from the area near the school.
